Allmighty mouse?
I guess you all know that I have only one computer (my rotten powerbook that I still need to send for repair..) that I use both at home and in the lab. To avoid to carry everyday all the tools and toys that I use along with my computer I have two power adapters and two mice.
I have a logitech MX 1000 at home (best mouse ever) and until last week I had my MX700 at the lab. The latest died on me and I decided to get a replacement. I didn’t want to get another MX1000 cause I was looking for something that I could travel with when I’m on the road. And because I canno’t leave without a multiple buttons and scrolling one, I decided to get the Apple Mighty Mouse instead of the bluetooth pro one (even though, this one is wireless..) .
After installing the driver, I gave it a run for two hours and here are the things that I like and don’t like about it..
Scroll Ball: The nipple scrollball is surprisingly very good. It’s both very soft and precise. The horizontal scrolling works like a charm for me (at least in safari) and that a nice plus compared to the MX1000.
Touch-sensitive top shell: While the idea of the non button is excellent (design wise), oddly enough it took me a while to get acustomized to it. I guess because I’m so used to have a single button mouse when I use an apple one. I also think that the buttons are a bit hard to press compare to my very soft and sensitive MX1000 ones.
Force-sensing side buttons: Wow, let me get these straigth: they sucks! First they are really hard to press and second they are really oddly (euphemism) placed. I don’t know how you place your hand over your mice over at Apple but I really think you got all the ergonomics wrong with this ones.
Optical Tracking:: Nothing to say there, excellent (same quality and usability as the laser tracking found in the MX1000).
Button Customization: I’m a bit disapointed there. Not much to do with the buttons. Basically you can either activate spotlight, dashboard, App switcher or use them to open a specific app. One feature that could be useful (at least for me cause I use it a lot with my logitech mouse) is to be able to set the side buttons to have the back and forward for safari..One idea among others..
Overall this mouse is a good buy but not the best device ever proposed by Apple. Finally for the ones interested, after a lot of hesitations, here are my current button settings.

Mighty Mouse always was one of my favorite cartoons. :P
I would like to get one of these too.

The MM suits me perfect….. I purchased it after a return of my MX1000. My complaint with the MX was the fact that you needed very large hands or a severely elongated thumb to make use of the left-sided buttons. :)
I find the side buttons on the MM just right……. we’re all different.
BTW…. what do you think of Aperture?

To each their own I guess but still Sean, don’t you think that the side buttons are hard to press?
Aperture seems like a very powerfull app. I’ve been using it very superficially and I need to go more indeep before appreciating it to its fullest. It seems like a really cool app though.

When I first brought the mouse home, yeah, I was trying to hard to actually “press” the buttons, but over time I developed a system, so to speak: when I mouse, I place my entire hand over the top of the mouse (this is where I had trouble with the MX1000) and when I want to use the side buttons I use my ring-finger and my thumb to tilt the mouse ever-so-slightly counter clockwise, activate the buttons and tilt back. I don’t even realise I’m doing it now.
Check out Steermouse for additional mouse button settings.
Aperture will be quite amazing once they work out a few bugs. On first impression I was really disappointed but I am forcing myself to use it and I am liking and getting used to it more everyday.
