Rotten book..
I recently found my powerbook (that I got a few months back) to be very sluggish compared to what it used to be. I first desabled Shapeshifter, then check through the activity monitor if some program was making the cpu running full speed and couldn’t find anything abnormal. I was about to do a clean install of Tiger when I got the idea of opening the system profiler. To my surprise, the book was running with 512mb of RAM. Knowing that my powerbook has two RAM chips for a total of 1.5gb, I thought, fuck my 1GB RAM is dead! To check it , I opened the computer and swapped the 2 chips and that resulted on having 1GB total.. The lower slot was not recognised..
I went here and there to see if there was any discussion forum about this problem and found that it’s actually a pretty well known case. The bad news is, to fix that, I have to have the motherboard replaced!! I have an applecare so it’s not such a big deal but that means that I have to sent the book of for a few weeks :-/
While I can leave without my Albook when I’m on vacation, that’s another story when I work. I’m gonna talk to my local Apple dealer to see if he can lend me a replacement while my computer is away..

Seems your not the only one having the bad lick with their computer, I’ve had nothing but problems with mine over the last 2 months. Then when I get it back from Apple my keyboard doesn’t even work… Really makes me wanna jump ship

That’s horrible Pat… I remember back in the PB G3 days I did all repairs myself but they have made these new ALU PB’s so hard to get in and around in.
Good luck friend….

Yeah, that’s a pain but I hope to have it fixed quickly. I still have to contact Apple about it..
